Who is Tom Daley’s American filmmaker husband, Dustin Lance Black – and why did they leave the UK? The Olympian shares 2 children with the Hollywood writer, who’s 20 years his senior

British diver Tom Daley made a strong comeback on the global sporting stage earlier this week when he earned a silver medal in the men’s synchronised 10m platform event alongside Noah Williams at the Paris Olympics.

However, this time around, his family – including his children – were present to see the special moment. “One of the main reasons for coming back to diving was to be able to have my kids watch and they’re all coming,” Daley, 30, told the official Olympics website. “My husband, the kids, my mum, my grandma, all my friends, aunties, uncles … We managed to get a lot of tickets this time around as I was a bit more prepared on the ticket front.”

Daley has been married to his husband Dustin Lance Black – who’s 20 years older than him – since 2012, and they share two children together.

Here’s what we know about the British athlete’s supportive husband:

Black has long been an LGBT rights advocate. In his acceptance speech at the 2008 Academy Awards, he said: “To all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the government or by their families, you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value. And that, no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you. And very soon – I promise you – you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours.”

Black and Daley ditched the UK for the US

According to the official Olympics website, Daley and Black currently live in Los Angeles. They reportedly moved out of the UK because Black believed that the British government “owed him an apology”. The writer was wrongly accused of assaulting BBC presenter Teddy Edwardes at a London nightclub, per The Guardian, but the case was dismissed in 2023. He told the newspaper he couldn’t understand how the case ever made it to court.

Daley later wrote on Instagram: “To be violently attacked, then blamed, dragged through a court process, having evidence lost, stories changed all for a judge to see the lies for exactly what they were and dismiss the case immediately, has been hugely draining for us as a family.”
