Who is Alec Baldwin’s 41-year-old star lawyer, Alex Spiro? The attorney – who also represented Elon Musk, Mick Jagger and Jay-Z – just helped get the SNL actor’s case dismissed in the Rust trial
In October 2021, Baldwin was practising with a revolver on the set of the film Rust, when a live bullet went off and killed the movie’s cinematographer. Per the BBC, it is the second time Baldwin’s case has been dismissed since the shooting, and there will not be another trial.
The case was dismissed after Baldwin’s lawyers alleged that police and prosecutors had hidden evidence – including a batch of bullets – which may have been integral to the case. The judge agreed, saying: “The state’s wilful withholding of this information was intentional and deliberate. There is no way for the court to right this wrong.”
Alex Spiro’s family background
According to The New Yorker, Alex Spiro is the eldest of four children and grew up in Manhattan and Massachusetts. His mother, Cynthia Kaplan, is a clinical psychologist who specialises in child and adolescent trauma, while his father works as a dentist.
Spiro’s mum told the publication that he was always a debater. “At eighteen months, he talked like he does now,” she said. “I remember him saying, ‘Actually, Mom’ at that age.”
He studied at Harvard
Per The New Yorker, Spiro enrolled in the prestigious Harvard Law School in 2005, and received a fellowship with the CIA while he was still studying. The same article notes that post graduation, he cut his teeth as a junior prosecutor in the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
He is an American lawyer
Despite his age, Spiro is already a seasoned lawyer. He is currently a partner at Quinn Emanuel Trial Lawyers, and works out of the firm’s New York office, according to his profile on the firm’s website. Spiro famously helped indict and convict Rodney Alcala, the “Dating Game” serial killer, as well as another notorious murderer Travis Woods.
He’s worked with a number of high-profile clients
He has an expensive hourly rate
Like most high-profile lawyers, Spiro charges a pricey fee for his services. According to People, court documents from a different case showed that Spiro’s hourly fee stood at US$2,205 per hour.
What’s next for Alec Baldwin after the trial?
As for Rust – the film Baldwin was working on at the time of the fatal incident – filming has resumed in Montana, according to Vulture, and will be released at some point in the future, though a date has not yet been set.
