CHIAYI, Taiwan (Reuters) – Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen visited military engineers on Saturday and reviewed their coaching, saying that defending democracy is the armed forces’ “nice” mission, forward of a visit subsequent week to the USA and Central America.

China, which views Taiwan as its personal territory, has stepped up its army and political stress over the previous three years or so to try to power the island to just accept Chinese language sovereignty, viewing Tsai as a separatist.

She is making a high-profile and delicate journey to the USA and Central America beginning on Wednesday. China has condemned the USA for permitting her to go, although her go to there may be technically solely a transit.

On the finish of the journey, Tsai is predicted to satisfy U.S. Home Speaker Kevin McCarthy in Los Angeles.

China staged battle video games close to Taiwan in August after then-U.S. Home Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei.

Visiting a military base in Chiayi in southern Taiwan, Tsai reviewed their coaching, seeing them erect anti-tank boundaries and follow martial arts.

“Defending Taiwan and defending democracy has all the time been our army’s nice mission,” she advised the troopers, accompanied by Taiwan’s Defence Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng and Nationwide Safety Council Secretary-Common Wellington Koo.

Tsai has repeatedly provided talks with China, however says Taiwan will defend itself if attacked and that solely the island’s folks can resolve their future.
