Shah Mehmood Qureshi stresses need for dialogue to secure Pakistan’s future

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Vice-Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi stressed on Friday that the need for negotiations is crucial for Pakistan’s stability, not just for PTI.

Speaking informally with the media during his appearance at an anti-terrorism court in Lahore on Friday, he stated that the country is at a critical juncture, and the talks must lead to a positive outcome, or the current government risks instability.

Qureshi highlighted that the failure of these negotiations could jeopardise the future of democracy in Pakistan. “Negotiations are essential for Pakistan’s future, not for PTI,” he stated, adding, “If these talks do not yield positive results, this government will lose its footing.”

He further remarked that while the government’s ability to fulfill its promises is yet to be seen, the priority should be to engage in dialogue first. 

Addressing the situation of political prisoners, Qureshi reiterated that PTI’s founder, Imran Khan, has always had the nation’s interests at heart. He stressed that PTI initiated the negotiation process with sincerity and with a focus on national well-being.

He also clarified that PTI’s demands are fair and justified, urging for the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the events of May 9 and November 26, 2022.

Additionally, PTI has called for the release of political prisoners, asserting that political detainees, like all citizens, deserve their rights under the law.

“Even individuals convicted of serious crimes can receive bail, yet we, who are politically innocent, have been denied both bail and a fair trial for over a year,” Qureshi said, urging for leniency for those wrongfully imprisoned under political charges.

He pointed out that PTI’s demands are within legal bounds, and it is vital for political prisoners to receive due consideration.

On the broader political landscape, Qureshi reflected on his experience as a former foreign minister, asserting that leaders like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who hold key positions, must understand the country’s national priorities.

He reiterated that Pakistan’s nuclear program is essential for the country’s defense and survival, and no political party should ever undermine it.

He concluded by expressing confidence that Pakistan would remain strong and resolute, urging the political leadership to demonstrate wisdom during these turbulent times.

He also praised the recent release of prisoners, calling it a positive step forward. “Releasing these prisoners is a welcome development,” Qureshi added, acknowledging the progress made.
