The Rudy Project Springshield Air to me brings together the vintage and the new. A modern style sunglasses for cycling etc but with a hint of nostalgia and the Italian cyclists style of days gone by.
Behind the scenes though these sunglasses are most definitely fit and designed for the modern athlete and their needs.
Their weight comes in at a mere 26g (0.91 oz). This is where the ‘air’ in the name comes from. Part of their design for the wearer is they are barely noticeable while wearing them. The lightweight nature does not sacrifice durability one bit.
Even though they have large wraparound rimless lenses they somehow do a super job of allowing ventilation in and stopping any sweat building up.
The Frames and Fit
Before we look at the important lenses we first need to look at the frame.
Along with the extreme lightness in weight they are not too tight yes there are subtle design elements that really do stop them from sliding off any as you cycle, or jog along.
There are really comfortable non slip nose pieces that not every brand gets right as we know. Around the temple the arms give width for the wide lenses and bycicle helmet straps without the big bulge that ‘specific for cyclists’ glasses seem to normally have these days.
The ends of the arms have a great way of gripping the head and keeping them secure without really feeling anything. Yes, very well thought out.
Whether you are jogging, walking or cycling, you will find it hard with any head movements to get these glasses to slide anywhere.
Lenses
Of course when you see these glasses they have the big wraparound cylindrical lenses. Whatever you are doing you can be sure of no blind spots. No distractions or light coming in on the peripheral side view.
Being half rimless too you loose the bottom weight as well as keep a clean, uncluttered view all round.
We found the clarity and contrast when using them to be excellent!
There are many people who have sensitive eyes to sunlight and these glasses do a good job of keeping it all out, nothing vreeping in from the sides. The big lenses also help to offer UV protection to the skin around the eyes too.
On the particular set we got they have a gold tinted mirror coating that cuts out all the glare.
Another surprising thing we found was that with such big lenses, as well as ventilation, there was no build up of fog. Put through many conditions and head positions there was no fog build up where we expected there to be.
