Academy Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer is set to work on a new interpretation of the Saudi national anthem, alongside potential projects celebrating the kingdom’s culture and heritage, according to Turki Al Sheikh, chairman of the General Entertainment Authority.

In a post shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, Al Sheikh praised Zimmer as “one of the greatest musicians of the modern age” and revealed that discussions covered several initiatives, including a composition titled Arabia, inspired by Saudi traditions.

Zimmer, a 12-time Oscar nominee and two-time winner for The Lion King and Dune, was also invited to score the soundtrack for an upcoming Saudi film, The Battle of Yarmouk.

Additionally, plans are underway for Zimmer to perform a large-scale concert during a future Riyadh Season, the kingdom’s annual winter festival featuring international music acts, sporting events, and cultural showcases.

Al Sheikh noted Zimmer’s admiration for Saudi Arabia and its people, adding that the composer expressed his desire to return with his family.

Zimmer, who recently performed at Dubai Opera with the Limitless Orchestra, has shown a deep appreciation for the Middle East’s influence on the arts.

Speaking to The National last year, Zimmer highlighted the importance of cultural fusion in film.

“If we look back, so many of the contributors to early film were refugees from Nazi Germany, or European immigrants more broadly. Cultures collided, and that brought something special,” he said.

He emphasised the growing global collaboration in the film industry, saying: “Now, we have a multitude of voices contributing to film from across the world – from the Middle East as well. Now we’re suddenly all allowed to be part of this wild culture, and that’s really a great thing. I love that I’m in a world of dreamers.”

Zimmer’s projects are poised to align with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which places significant focus on arts, entertainment, and cultural exchange.
