Nawaz lends ear to Punjab MPAs concerns

Parliamentarians belonging to the PML-N in the Punjab Assembly, while showering their government with praises, have relayed their complaints for being shunted out of the decision-making process by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz-led provincial government during a meeting with party president Nawaz Sharif.

The elder Sharif and her daughter met on Wednesday another group of parliamentarians from Punjab — a continuation of a series of such meetings — in order to seek their “unfiltered” feedback with regard to the performance of the government and to do away with their misgivings if any.

He separately held meetings with parliamentarians from Pakpattan and Okara, Sheikhupura, Kasur and Nankana Sahib. The MPAs, according to those in attendance, were accorded descent time to express their opinion candidly.

Party MPAs did in fact relayed toned down complaint to Main Nawaz Sharif for being left out of the decision-making process even in matters related to their respective constituencies.

According to an attendee, MPAs, other than the aforementioned complaint, expressed their anguish at the bureaucracy’s cold attitude. He said that these uptight civil servants were misleading the government regarding them, explaining that their mere suggestions or concerns expressed before these government officers, were presented before the chief minister as a brazen attempt at interference in matters of the state.

He said that that was a standard tactic deployed by bureaucrats to keep them out of the information and decision-making loop.

He said that besides the two grievances, the MPAs were by and large all praises for the government, claiming that Maryam Nawaz’s performance has in fact managed to resonate with the people of Punjab.

He said that the complaint of not being taken on board was nothing new. “MPAs have expressed such complaints even during Shehbaz Sharif’s time when he was the chief minister of the province.”

Asked what was the response of Nawaz on the complaints, he said that the party president took even criticism in his idiosyncratic positive vein. He said he did acknowledge the need of taking the MPAs on board in the matters pertaining to their constituencies.

He said Nawaz has also asked the MPAs to increase liaison with their constituents. He said Mian Nawaz asked the MPAs to seek suggestions of youngsters and nobles of the areas on local issues. He said that the party president also asked MPAs to ensure that all those down-trodden people affected by the anti-encroachment drive were duly compensated. He said that Mian Nawaz also asked the party MPAs to adapt according to the new requirements and to abandon the old conventional snobbish approach.

According to a party news release, PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, while talking to the assembly members, said, “Economic decline has turned to progress. Improvements in the economic indicators is the improvement of Pakistan. We are putting Pakistan on the path to progress and prosperity once again by improving its economy.”

Sharif said, “Economic activities are increasing with the reduction in the policy rate from 22 to 12 percent and the economy is benefiting. The rupee has stabilized and growth is increasing. The stock exchange is at its highest level, inflation is decreasing.”
