Meet Marius Borg Høiby, son of Norway’s Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who was just arrested: the 27-year-old was detained for allegedly ‘causing bodily harm’ to a woman in Oslo

Marius Borg Høiby – the son of Norway’s Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of Crown Prince Haakon – was arrested over the weekend, after allegedly “causing bodily harm” to a woman who ended up being treated at a hospital for a concussion, as reported by People.

AP reports that the incident took place on August 4 when officers responded to a disturbance in Oslo and detained 27-year-old Borg Høiby, who now faces preliminary charges of bodily harm and criminal damage. Per the source, police said there was “a relationship between the suspect and the victim” and they “currently do not have information that the victim has suffered serious injuries”.

A Norwegian news agency claimed that Princess Mette-Marit postponed a trip to the Olympic Games in Paris as a result of the incident, but her husband Prince Haakon went on ahead to the French capital.

Borg Høiby is the firstborn son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and convicted felon Morten Borg, per Hello! Magazine. Little is known about his biological father and what his relationship is like with him today. He has two step-siblings from his mother’s marriage to Crown Prince Haakon – the future queen Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus.

The Quart Festival – Norway’s largest music gathering – played an important role in the love story of his mum and Crown Prince Haakon meeting. It was at one of the event’s garden parties that the prince and the former waitress first crossed paths. A few years later, when Mette-Marit had already given birth to Marius, they bumped into each other again and became romantically involved, marrying in 2001.

As reported by The Washington Post, Borg has no royal title or official duties. Nor is he in the line of succession for the Norwegian throne, adds People.

Back in 2017, his mother confirmed the fact in an open letter shared on the royal family’s website. “Marius has always had a role that has been difficult to define in the public sphere,” she wrote, as translated by People. “He is and will be an exceptionally important part of our family. Marius became a symbol of the unusual choice we made when we got married, at the same time, he will not carry public duties like his siblings. He should not have a public role and is not a public figure.”

He’s done some TV

According to IMDB, Borg Høiby has appeared as himself in a handful of Norwegian shows, and was also an extra playing a “partygoer” in teenage drama Skan.

He goes to public events

Despite not having any official duties, Borg Høiby has made several public appearances and remains a topic of interest for many. In 2022, he took part in his half-sister Princess Ingrid Alexander’s 18th birthday celebrations, per People.

He was also pictured at the Maleficent 2 Disney premiere in Norway with actress Juliane Snekkestad in 2019; the Formula E Simulator at the Brit Awards’ official after show party in London in 2018; and posed with his mother during the King and Queen of Norway’s Silver Jubilee Tour in 2016.

He lives a relatively private life

Back in 2012, when he was 15, he was involved in a security scandal after the media realised he was posting the whereabouts of the Norwegian royal family on his Instagram, reports Vogue Australia. Nowadays, he mainly shares photos and videos of his travels, his dogs, and his friends.
