Eric Murphy, son of Eddie Murphy and Paulette McNeely, just celebrated his 35th birthday on July 10, but it sounds like his dad would love to celebrate something else somewhere down the line – a funny grandkid.

Earlier this month, Eddie spoke about his eldest son’s relationship with Jasmin Lawrence, daughter of Martin Lawrence, who was Eddie’s co-star in Boomerang (1992) and Life (1999), during an interview on CBS Mornings.

Again … kind of. If you’ve watched the movie and did not spot him, that is because Eric didn’t appear in the film. Rather, he provided the automated dialogue replacement (ADR) for his father’s character in the film. He did the same in Candy Cane Lane (2023).

ADR is the process of re-recording dialogue in a studio during post-production on a film for clarity. Considering how similar father and son sound, you probably didn’t even notice! Eric got this job by auditioning for it.

How did Eric Murphy meet Jasmin Lawrence?

Contrary to what you may think, Eric and Jasmin, who is seven years his junior, were not introduced to each other by their famous fathers. The Relatively Famous: Ranch Rules star told InTouch Weekly that it was actually her uncle who connected them. She added that the two bonded over their “similar backgrounds” and that they “understood each other”. And though they’ve gone from friends to lovers, she still calls him her “best friend”.

Eric first made their relationship Instagram-official in June 2021 by posting a picture of them together that was captioned: “Head over heels in love with you”. (Both his and Jasmin’s Instagram accounts appear to be deactivated at the time of writing.)

The next year, at the wedding of Eric’s sister Bria, Jasmin caught the bouquet tossed by the bride, per People. When her beau posted his congratulations to the happy couple on his Instagram, he added a “special shout-out to Jas for catching the bouquet”.

Eric Murphy is a private and well-rounded person

Besides his public relationship with Jasmin, Eric has remained relatively out of the spotlight. And you can tell he’s been able to do that because he of his upbringing. In a 2021 report by People, Eddie said that he’s “so blessed with my kids, I don’t have one bad seed. My kids are so great, normal people – and nobody is like the Hollywood jerk kid”.

Eric later posted a heartfelt message to the man of the hour on his Instagram, saying that he was “not only one of the funniest and most talented actors on the planet, but also an amazing father”. He went on to thank him for raising Jasmin into a “beautiful, strong, and compassionate woman”, and congratulated him on his star. He wrapped up the post with: “You truly deserve this honour and all the recognition that comes with it. We love you!”
