The world’s longest driverless train system is now fully operational in Saudi Arabia, with the Riyadh Metro completing its phased rollout, according to Gulf News.

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has successfully completed the phased rollout of the Riyadh Metro, with the Orange Line officially commencing operations on Sunday. This marks the full operational launch of all six lines in the expansive Riyadh Metro network, enhancing connectivity across the city.

The Orange Line, also known as Line 3, spans 41 kilometers, linking the eastern and western sectors of Riyadh. It connects Jeddah Road in the west to the second eastern ring road near the Khashm Al Aan area in the east. This milestone completes the phased operation plan initially set out during the Riyadh Metro’s inauguration by King Salman on November 27, 2024.

The new Orange Line, operational from 6 am on Sunday, welcomed passengers at five stations: Jeddah Road, Tuwaiq, Douh, Harun Al-Rashid Road, and Al-Naseem, with the latter serving as a transfer point to the Purple Line.

In addition to the Orange Line, the RCRC has opened three new stations on the Blue Line, which connects Olaya Street to Batha. The newly added stations are Al Morooj, Bank Al Bilad, and King Fahd Library.

The Riyadh Metro began its phased operations in December 2024, starting with the Blue, Yellow, and Purple Lines on December 1, followed by the Red and Green Lines on December 15.

With the full system now in service, the metro network—spanning 176 kilometers and featuring 85 stations, including four main hubs—solidifies its place as the largest metro system in the Middle East and the world’s longest driverless train network.

Operating daily from 6 am till midnight, the Riyadh Metro offers passengers the convenience of digital ticket purchases through the Darb app, ticket offices, or self-service kiosks. Payment options include credit cards, bank transfers, and mobile devices, ensuring smooth and accessible travel across the city for both residents and visitors.
