FX renews English Teacher for season 2 despite controversy
FX has officially renewed English Teacher for a second season, with the 10-episode installment set to premiere in 2025. The comedy series, created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024.
“English Teacher was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024, and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors, and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” said FX President Nick Grad. “We look forward to the new season.”
The show follows Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, as he navigates personal, professional, and political challenges in the workplace. The first season earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards, the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and the Writers Guild of America.
However, the renewal comes amid lingering controversy surrounding Alvarez. In August 2024, his former colleague Jon Ebeling accused him of sexual misconduct stemming from their work on the 2016 YouTube series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo. Ebeling alleged that Alvarez engaged in a non-consensual act during a filmed scene. Alvarez, through his legal team, has denied the allegations, maintaining that the interaction was consensual based on prior encounters between the two actors.
Despite the controversy, English Teacher has maintained strong critical reception, and FX is moving forward with its second season.
