Filmmaker Nabeel Qureshi took to social media to pay tribute to Indian cinema icon Om Puri on the eighth anniversary of his passing. Qureshi, who had the rare privilege of working with Puri in his 2016 film Actor in Law, expressed his disbelief over the actor’s untimely death.
Qureshi, reminiscing about their time together, shared that he was only 30 years old when he had the chance to direct such a legendary actor. “I was just 30 when I got the chance to direct this extraordinary actor, someone whose craft was larger than life, yet whose heart was even bigger,” he wrote.
“But my connection with him went far beyond work. The bond we built while working together remains one of the most cherished chapters of my life. Om Puri Ji was so loving, caring, and full of warmth — a compassionate human being above all else.”
The director went on to describe their unforgettable memories made together across Pakistan, India, and Dubai. Puri’s hospitality, love for food, and ability to make others feel at ease stood out in Qureshi’s recollections.
“I still remember how excited we were about meeting again in February 2017 for the PSL in Dubai. He had this unique ability to make everyone feel comfortable — so much so that I would sometimes forget I was sitting with a living legend and take his kindness for granted. He was that humble, that approachable.”
Reflecting on the loss, Qureshi shared that he and producer Fizza Meerza often found themselves reminiscing about Puri’s wisdom and warmth. “We miss him deeply. Om Puri Ji was a man beyond borders, an artist who stood for peace and humanity. May his soul rest in eternal peace. His legacy continues to inspire us, and his memories will forever be etched in our hearts.”
Om Puri’s legacy, however, extends far beyond his work with Qureshi. A true pioneer of Indian cinema, Puri was celebrated for his dynamic range, having effortlessly transitioned between commercial and parallel films.
His landmark performances in movies like Ardh Satya, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, and City of Joy cemented his place as one of the finest actors of his generation. Puri’s work was never confined by borders, as he gained recognition not only in India but also internationally.
His message of peace and humanity, which he carried throughout his career, continues to influence actors and filmmakers today.
May his soul rest in peace, but his profound influence on cinema and the hearts of those who knew him will forever endure.
