On a recent walk through the Staffordshire countryside we came upon The Fitzherbert Arms in the quaint village of Swynnerton nr Stone. It came at the perfect time, for a spot of lunch.
The Fitzherbert Arms I had heard of before and had been recommended to me in the past. It is a renowned establishment that has garnered lots of attention for its delightful culinary offerings and inviting atmosphere. It has won plenty of awards including best pub in Staffordshire.
I knew what I was having to eat before stepping inside, I had heard so much about their famous Homemade Steak and Ale Pie it had to be done.
It is more than just a pub, it is also known as the pub with largest collection of Port within a bottle in the UK.
Of course, with it having a reputation like that preceeding it, as well as passing by it at lunch time, we just had to step inside and see, taste for ourselves. Let’s take a look.
Brief History
The pub sits in the heart of the leafy village of Swynnerton in Staffordshire. Way back to the Norman times the Swynnerton family where the Lords of the land around here all the way through to the 16th century when Elizabeth Swynnerton married Sir William Fitzherbert, you can see where the pub name starts to form now.
The Fitzherbert family hold the title of Lord Stafford so Swynnerton came under Lord Stafford Estate. The Fitzherbert Arms pub is believed to have been founded in 1818 in what was once a Smithy.
After many decades of being under lease it was back in the Stafford Estate by 2015 and brought back to the glory you see today.
Ambience and Decor
Exterior Appearance
As you enter the village and approach the Fitzherbert Arms, you are greeted by a picturesque facade that exudes traditional charm. The building features classic stonework and rustic wooden accents, making it an inviting sight.
It does feel inviting and not only does it attract people specifically to come and stay or dine here, I am more than sure it attracts walkers passing by or people on a journey who pass by.
Around the back there is a large and plentiful car park with a wooden terrace too so plenty can enjiy their food and/or drink outside on a warm day.
Interior Design and Layout
Stepping inside, the interior of the Fitzherbert Arms continues to impress with its thoughtful design. It has a gorgeous mix of larger dining and bar area with small cozy rooms to relax by the fireplace in delightful warm lighting.
A well designed mix of traditional, rustic elements and new with unique little things catching your eye as you peruse the surroundings. Some things may look mismatched but just work well and little alcoves to enjoy food or a drink in peace if you so wish.
The layout is spacious yet cozy, allowing for both intimate dining and larger gatherings. Leather chairs by little tables near the fireplace that make a warm feel for lunch. Or you can go into the larger dining area for a larger group or for a more formal dinner with friends and family.
I really did sense the relaxed atmosphere that had been created as well as with the wonderful staff.
The pub is very dog friendly and there are rooms that dogs are allowed or not allowed in. Never feels a downgrade I must add. We had the 3 dogs with us and they were made to feel very welcome. Dog Beer was on offer too.
Overall Atmosphere
The overall atmosphere of the Fitzherbert Arms is one of comfort and friendliness. The staff and service experience at the Fitzherbert Arms is full of joy, warmth and professionalism.
Even though I knew what I was wanting to eat the staff were amazing at helping with options and choices, just in case we may miss something special.
Everything was done with a natural smile, no matter how busy the place was becoming. Other walkers and locals coming and going. A real lovely buzz in the air.
Food and Dining
The Fitzherbert Arms offers a diverse menu that caters to a variety of tastes and preferences. The selection ranges from classic pub fare to innovative dishes that showcase seasonal ingredients. As I was reading the menu I saw a blend of well known hearty meals and lighter options, ensuring there is something for everyone.
From great looking Wagyu Beef Cheeseburgers to Local Ale Battered Haddock. Or all manner of dishes like Lamb Risotto, Chicken supreme or duck breast. But, I was here to try the Famous (they even say Legendary) Homemade Handcrafted Steak and Fitzherbert Ale Pie!
Oh my it was a large, hearty and delicious pie indeed. It did take the steak and ale pie to another level. Served with chips and minty ‘not so mushy’ peas. Very reasonably priced too I thought considering the place, size of dish and how it was made and presented. All just £17.95.
One thing I did notice was the freshness of all the food on offer. All ther food is locally produced and the menu reflects the seasons to enable this.
Another great thing I saw was that they had a full Gluten Free Menu with many traditional favourites and more on there to itself.
Drinks
The drink selection at the Fitzherbert Arms is equally impressive, featuring a well-rounded wine list, craft beers, and creative cocktails. There are plenty of local ales that complement your meals or maybe with an evening meal you can opt for one of the classic cocktails on offer. The bar area is inviting, encouraging guests to relax after work or enjoy a pre-dinner drink while soaking in the atmosphere.
They do a great coffee or tea too as we found out nicely.
Port
As I said earlier this pub has the most number of bottled Port within a pub in England. There are signs of how prominent port is adorned on the walls.
They have a vast port list as prominent as the wine list.
Accommodation
For those who want to explore the area you can also stay here. Gloriously decorated en-suite rooms that have the same attention to detail from the inside of the pub on offer.
We were actually staying nearby in a lovely secret wood lodge by Shacks.
Conclusion
The Fitzherbert Arms I found was a wonderful dining destination with its charming atmosphere, diverse menu, and attentive service.
We walked in mid hike and it was the perfect place to stop half way around to enjoy some delicious food. I can also see myself booking here for a proper evening meal too and do intend to do so soon.
The value you get for the ambience, service and locally produced, delicious food is exceptional to be honest. And the steak and ale pie? One of the best I have ever had.
This place is a real gem in the Staffordshire countryside.
