“Did you cry?”
Arriving for an interview about this week’s CSI: Vegas, which he co-wrote (with Alex Berry), CSI franchise co-creator Anthony E. Zuiker leads with that easy query, hoping that he and visitor star Regina Taylor hit the deeply emotional mark for which they aimed. (Oh, and for this Journalist of a Sure Age, the reply was, “Properly, yeah.”)
Airing Thursday at 10/9c on CBS, the episode “The Promise” is an actual throat-clearer, coming because it does on the heels of this season’s Silver Ink Killer arc. The set-up: When the physique of a younger lady who was killed over 40 years in the past is found in a barrel on the backside of Lake Mead, Maxine Roby (performed by Paula Newsome) guarantees the lady’s mom, Raquel Williams (Taylor), that the CSI crew will discover justice — by figuring out her daughter’s killer.

“I realized from [CSI co-creators] Carol Mendelsohn and Ann Donahue, [CSI: NY showrunner] Pam Veasey, feminine showrunners that taught me tv,” Zuiker shares. “And whereas what makes CSI efficiently globally is nice writing, unbelievable mysteries and superior actors, the glue that holds it collectively is the emotionality of episodes like this one. When you’ve an emotional undercurrent, CSI is the most effective present on this planet.”
“I’ve liked Paula for a very long time, from all of her exhibits — Chicago Hope [in 1999] via now,” Taylor says. “So the chance to work collectively, to play and create together with her, was very thrilling.
“After which to learn the script and see what we’d be embarking on…. Anthony did such a gorgeous job in creating this storyline with Maxine and Raquel,” Taylor raves. “I like taking journeys with nice folks, so this was like a dream.”
For Zuiker, in the meantime, the dream was to see that caliber of collaboration occur proper in entrance of him, on-set.
“What’s humorous about that is that what Regina by no means sees is me behind the displays with different producers, grabbing and squeezing one another and making faces like we simply scored a landing,” Zuiker shares. “Each time they are saying, ‘Motion!,’ she’s so good.”
