Coldplay’s ‘Moon Music’ to set new sustainability standards in music industry

British rock band Coldplay has announced the upcoming release of their tenth studio album, ‘Moon Music,’ scheduled for October 4.

The album’s first single, ‘feelslikeimfallinginlove,’ is set to debut this Friday, the band announced on their social media.

Renowned producer Max Martin, known for his collaborations with Britney Spears, The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande, produced the album. This marks Coldplay’s first album since their 2021 release, ‘Music of the Spheres.’

As reported by Variety, Coldplay is placing a strong emphasis on sustainability with ‘Moon Music.’ The band has integrated several environmentally conscious measures into the album’s release. Their ongoing tour has already achieved a 59% reduction in CO2e emissions compared to their previous stadium tour.

‘Moon Music’ will be released as the world’s first 140g EcoRecord LP, made from nine recycled PET-plastic bottles per copy. This initiative is expected to prevent the creation of over 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic and reduce CO2 emissions by 85% compared to traditional vinyl production.

In partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, Coldplay will also offer a Notebook Edition EcoRecord LP, composed of 70% river plastic collected from Guatemala’s Rio Las Vacas. Additionally, the CD versions of ‘Moon Music’ will be the first to use EcoCDs, made from 90% recycled polycarbonate, cutting CO2 emissions by at least 78% and avoiding over five metric tonnes of virgin plastic, Variety reports.

To minimise waste, the first edition of ‘Moon Music’ (both EcoRecord LP and EcoCD) will be limited and produced to higher specifications than future editions, with each EcoRecord LP individually numbered. The Notebook Edition will include a hardback book replicating Chris Martin’s studio notebook, featuring 28 pages of notes, lyrics, and illustrations, along with additional voice notes and demos from the album’s creation process.
