Google’s Gemini upgrades put the pressure on OpenAI’s GPT-5

Google offered a tantalizing glimpse into Gemini’s future, showcasing capabilities not yet seen in competing generative AI models. This strategic move places OpenAI in a position where it needs to respond swiftly with a new ChatGPT enhancement.

Upcoming ChatGPT upgrade rumors

Recent reports suggest that OpenAI’s upcoming ChatGPT upgrade might incorporate features reminiscent of Google’s Gemini plans. Even Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, hinted on X (formerly Twitter) that the next major upgrade might be imminent.

Gemini Live: A conversational AI assistant

Rick Osterloh, Google’s Senior Vice President of Devices and Services, concluded the press event with the “one more thing” announcement: Gemini Live. This feature, integrated into Project Astra, enables continuous voice conversations with the AI, mimicking human interactions. It’s currently accessible to Gemini Advanced subscribers, with plans to introduce camera and screen integration for contextual understanding in the future.

Voice Mode and advanced reasoning

OpenAI showcased its Voice Mode for GPT-4 shortly before Google’s Project Astra reveal in May. Voice Mode is gradually being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus users, with wider availability expected later this year.

Osterloh further revealed that Google is enhancing Gemini’s agentive capabilities, empowering it to tackle complex problems with advanced reasoning, planning, and memory. This advancement paves the way for Gemini to function as a true AI assistant, capable of executing tasks autonomously under user supervision.

These developments mirror rumors surrounding the next major ChatGPT upgrade, internally referred to as Q* or Strawberry. Some speculate that this upgrade represents the GPT-5 model, introducing sophisticated reasoning capabilities for multi-step planning. Additionally, it’s rumored to excel at web research, a feature also coming to Gemini.

Gemini as your researcher

Osterloh emphasized Gemini’s potential as a research assistant, saving users time by compiling tailored research reports based on web-sourced information.

Google’s Gemini advancements are propelling the AI landscape forward, prompting OpenAI to accelerate its development efforts to maintain its competitive edge. The future of AI assistants appears brighter than ever, with exciting possibilities on the horizon.
