Meet Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin’s daughter, Lilly Luhrmann: she spoke up about how gossip around her dad affects her life, and owns her ‘nepo baby’ status – but is she dating anyone?
Life as a celebrity kid might be privileged, but it can also be tricky to navigate – at least, that was the case for Lilly Luhrmann, daughter of Elvis director Baz Luhrmann, who is relentlessly hounded by speculation about his sexuality and marriage to Oscar-winning costume designer Catherine Martin.
Last year, his daughter finally opened up about how the rumours surrounding her father affect her daily life. In an interview on the podcast Under the Gloss with Phoebe Burgess, Lilly recalled being followed to school by the paparazzi, and riding in a car while a radio show discussed rumours of her father’s sexuality.
Rather than feeling embarrassed though, she simply wondered, “Why are people talking about my dad? Why are they making fun?” She went on to recount having to justify why her parents slept separately to her schoolmates, saying, “They just have different sleeping schedules!” While she emphasised that these incidents didn’t affect her long-term, she did say she felt like “something was a bit amiss”.

More recently, Baz fuelled speculation about his marriage in a random street interview with TikTok creator Georgia Godworth. In the impromptu vox pop, the director enigmatically mentioned that he and his wife had “found our own really genuine and authentic concept of what our contract to each other should be”. He went on to mention bringing “other people into your arrangement” and believing that marriage requires “some degree of acceptance”.
But what else do we know about Baz Luhrmann’s daughter? Here’s everything to know about the 20-year-old, who is carving out her own path in life and who her mother calls the “alpha personality” of the Luhrmann household.

Lilly told Phoebe Burgess on her podcast that she studies popular music, technology and digital media at The University of Queensland.
She also might be working at a nightclub. In March, she appeared in a Reel shared by Rattlesnake Nightclub about a staff party and has appeared in many more of the club’s social media content. Per its official website, Rattlesnake Nightclub is an “all-inclusive space” that aims to support local artists.
She acknowledges her “nepo baby” privilege

Lilly also said on the Under The Gloss podcast that she is “freakin’ aware” of her “nepo baby” status, and that her parents are a “massive part of [her] identity”. She added that she considers the “nepo baby” title a “price to pay” for her privilege, and wants to “continue [her parents’] legacy of kindness”. However, she also acknowledged that she hid her background at school for a while.

During the pandemic, Lilly teamed up with Study Queensland to establish the Study Queensland Luhrmann Appeal, per her LinkedIn, a campaign to raise money and help international students in Queensland – especially those struggling during the pandemic.
Together with her mum, Lilly was also part of Australian fashion brand Camilla and Marc’s “Ovaries. Talk About Them,” campaign, which aimed to raise funds to further research on an early detection test for ovarian cancer.

Not much is known about Lilly’s private life, but her Instagram grid suggests that she is either very close friends with, or dating, someone named Hamish (@ilyhamish on Instagram), who also appeared in Rattlesnake Nightclub’s Reel with her. She called him her “roommate” in an Instagram comment, and posted pictures with him with the caption “I’m single,” to which Hamish replied with Pinocchio emojis, suggesting that she wasn’t being entirely truthful. Hamish even seems to have met her parents already, having tagged along on a Luhrmann family trip aboard the luxurious Venice Simplon Orient-Express train.
Lilly mentioned on the Under The Gloss podcast in 2023 that she had a boyfriend who lived with her and her family, but it is unclear who exactly she was referring to.
