25th anniversary and beyond: ASTRI drives innovation and solidifies Hong Kong’s standing as a leading I&T hub

Since its inception by the Hong Kong Government in 2000, the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) has transformed ideas into impactful technologies that enhance our everyday lives and pave the way for a brighter future.

“ASTRI has been at the forefront of applied science and technology research, consistently driving Hong Kong’s competitiveness in the global arena,” says Ir Sunny Lee, Board Chairman of ASTRI.

As of 2024, ASTRI has transferred over 1,500 technologies to industry partners and secured more than 1,100 patents worldwide, including in China and the United States.

ASTRI has demonstrated a strong commitment to applied research, achieving significant milestones in both local and international I&T ecosystems. These achievements include establishing the Hong Kong Branch of the National Engineering Research Centre for ASIC Systems (CNERC) in partnership with Southeast University; contributing to Mainland China’s first Third-Generation Semiconductor Power Electronics Technology Roadmap; and launching a cross-border smart connected autonomous vehicle driving test in Hetao, Shenzhen.

As a champion of home-grown innovation, ASTRI continues to support local innovators and scientists, fostering cutting-edge technologies and exploring diverse possibilities in inventions. Many local innovators nurtured by ASTRI have won numerous awards at prestigious international innovation competitions. The institute’s dedication helps maintain a sustainable talent pool of innovators for Hong Kong’s future development into an I&T hub.

Strategic partnerships

ASTRI has played a strategic role in bolstering the research landscape through collaboration with the government, academia, industry, and research institutions. This effort has been pivotal in positioning Hong Kong as an international I&T hub.
